Easter Trifles

Trust me when I say this is one of the easiest Easter Trifle recipes you’ll ever make. If you can follow package directions for instant pudding and melt chocolate, you’ve got this trifle dessert recipe in the bag. This recipe takes about one hour to make or maybe a little more time if the kids want to help.

Everyone will enjoy the sweet surprise of a bunny’s butt sticking out of his little rabbit hole. However, once they dig past the surface, they’ll discover how delicious the dirt layers are. Who can resist chocolate pudding mousse and chocolate cookie crumbs?!

I recommend serving these adorable desserts on a themed tray lined with Easter grass, mini eggs and other yummy Easter treats. Mini trifle dishes work best, but you could also use jars or even stemless wine glasses as long as the serving vessel is transparent. You want the trifle layers to show!

Note: This Easter dessert recipe makes enough for 8 people. However, you can scale it upward or downward depending on the size of your family. Just be sure to order enough bunny feet/tails to complete the trifles!

Ingredients for Easter Trifles

This Easter trifle dessert recipe couldn’t be easier. All you need is a few bags of Oreo cookies (regular and golden Oreos), some Cool Whip, white chocolate, and instant chocolate pudding mix. There’s no food coloring, cake mix, or baking of any kind!

To make this Easter dessert even more special, I suggest you order a few ‘accessories’ via Amazon or find them at your local cake decorating store. For the Bunny Butt Cookies you’ll need white sugar sprinkles, Bunny Feet and Bunny Tails while Easter sprinkles to simulate edible Easter grass on top of the dirt cups.

Ingredients required to make and decorate Bunny Butt Cookies.
  • Golden Oreos
  • White Chocolate Melting Wafers
  • White Sugar Sprinkles
  • Edible Sugar Bunny Feet and Tails
  • Oreo Cookies
  • Cool Whip
  • Instant Chocolate Pudding
  • Easter Sprinkles

If you’re not a fan of premade whipped topping, feel free to mix the chocolate pudding with the equivalent amount of whipped cream. You can also use regular chocolate Oreos or a different kind of Vanilla Sandwich Cookie for the Bunny Butt Cookies.

Likewise, if you prefer more visual contrast in your Easter trifle, feel free to use vanilla pudding instead of chocolate. And, if you use vanilla pudding, you can add pink food coloring or blue food coloring to make the layers more festive.

How to Make Easter Trifles with Bunny Butt Toppers

The Bunny Butt Cookies require a bit of time to harden so I recommend making them before you start on the trifles. PS they make great Easter treats on their own and also work as cupcake toppers!

To begin, line a baking sheet with parchment paper then pour 10 oz white chocolate into a microwave safe bowl. Heat in the microwave at 30 second increments until melted, stirring in between each time.

Once melted, drop one cookie into the bowl and turn to evenly coat. Use a fork to carefully lift the cookie out of the bowl, letting access drip off before placing it on the lined baking sheet. (If desired, you can wait for the chocolate to harden at this stage and then double dip the cookie back into the white chocolate for a thicker covering especially if you used chocolate Oreo cookies).

Once dipped according to desired thickness, immediately sprinkle with sugar sprinkles and allow white chocolate to harden. It will harden quickly with one layer but takes a little longer if you double dip the cookies.

Once the white chocolate has completely hardened, put a small dab of melted chocolate on each foot and place it on the cookie. Do the same for the tail. Set aside while you make the Easter trifles.

For the Bunny Garden Cups (Easter Trifles)

To make the dirt cups, pour 9 oz Oreo cookies into a food processor. Blend until the cookies are completely crumbled. Set aside. Note: To crumble the Oreos for the dirt cups if you do not have a food processor, you can put them in a large Ziploc bag, seal it and then take a spoon and crumble the cookies.  Try to crumble them as finely as possible.

Next, fold the container of cool whip into the bowl of prepared chocolate pudding. Gently mix until completely blended.

Begin layering with the pudding mixture on the bottom of each trifle bowl. Next, spoon a layer of Oreo cookie crumbles on top of the pudding mixture. Use the spoon to press down slightly to even out the layer. Add a layer of the pudding mixture again, taking care not to mix the cookie crumbles into the pudding.

Finally, add the last layer of Oreo cookie crumbles and smooth out then place easter sprinkles around the outside of the cup. Place Bunny Butt Cookies on top of the Easter Trifle just before serving.

Storing the Leftovers

Store the Bunny Butt cookies in an airtight container on the counter for 3-5 days (if they will last that long!). If you are combining them with an Oreo Dirt Pie, wait until right before serving to add the cookie on top of the dirt cup.

The Easter trifles are best when assembled just before serving. They do not keep their texture if stored for more than a few hours.
