Halloween Deviled Eggs are everyone’s favourite egg appetizer all dressed up for Halloween. Follow this ‘how to’ guide and allow your imagination to run wild as you create your own spooky deviled egg characters.
Our family loves deviled eggs. Every time I make a batch of Zesty Nacho Deviled Eggs they fly right off the platter! Everyone loves the taco seasoned filling and crispy dorito topping. Another family favourite appetizer is deviled eggs made with pickled eggs. The pickling adds another delicious layer of flavour to deviled eggs.

Halloween Deviled Eggs
Halloween Deviled Eggs are a blast to make and super fun to eat. You can send them for school snacks, serve them as a fun (and healthy) pre or post trick or treating snack, or as a Halloween party appetizer.
This appetizer recipe offers many options; cook the eggs using an Instant Pot or your own method. Use avocado in the yolk filling, make the classic deviled egg filling or use both. Add as much or as little food colouring as you like, and finally…you can make all six variations, focus on one or two variations, or create your own spooky deviled egg.
Think of it as your own ‘choose your adventure’ deviled egg story, play with your food, and most importantly have fun!
Ingredients for Halloween Deviled Eggs
This Halloween deviled egg recipe features healthy hard cooked egg halves, coloured yolk filling, decorative vegetable cut outs, and deli sliced cheese. Two tasty yolk filling recipes (classic and avocado) are also included.
- Eggs
- Mayonnaise
- Vinegar (optional)
- Yellow Mustard Powder
- Sweet Paprika
- Salt
- Pepper
- Avocado
- Lime Juice
- Red Pepper
- Sliced Black Olives
- Chives
- Hickory Sticks or Pretzels
- Sliced Deli Cheese
- Food Colouring in various colours
How to Hard Cook Eggs in the Instant Pot
To hard cook eggs in the Instant Pot, position the metal rack in the bottom of the Instant Pot insert. Add 1 cup of water and place as many eggs as you like on the rack. Place the lid on, ensure the valve is closed and set the timer for 5 minutes on high pressure.
Once the eggs have been cooking for 5 minutes, allow them to sit a further three minutes then release the pressure by moving the valve. Remove the eggs and place them in a bowl of ice water to cool. I find that cracking them slightly before placing in the water makes them easy to peel.
To make the red dyed Creepy Eye Deviled Eggs, crack three eggs by smashing them slightly on the kitchen counter. Place eggs in a small bowl. Next, fill the bowl with enough water to cover the eggs.
Remove the eggs and add red liquid food colouring by the drop until you are satisfied with how dark the colour is. Add the cracked eggs back into the red water and place in the fridge overnight.
Before assembling, remove the shells, rinse, and pat dry. Slice lengthwise or crosswise.
How to Make The Decorations
All you need to decorate these Halloween Deviled Eggs is a red pepper, sliced black olives, chives, and cheese. I highly recommend a sharp knife, a cutting board, a small egg shaped cookie cutter, and straws (metal works best) of several diameters.
Use a sharp knife to cut out small triangle eyes, horns, and pointy tails (for the Devil deviled eggs) from the red pepper. Then use a metal straw to punch out round red pepper circles to be the pupils of the creepy bloodshot eyes.
Next, cut triangle eyes, mouths (Jack ‘o’ lantern eggs), legs, bodies (spider eggs), lashes, irises (creepy bloodshot eyes) and beards (Devil deviled eggs) using the sliced black olives.
Use a small egg shaped cookie cutter to cut the mask shape out of the cheese slice. Use straws of various sizes to cut eye and mouth holes in the masks. Finally, cut little stem pieces for the Jack ‘o’ lantern eggs using chives.
How to Make Avocado Deviled Egg Filling
Avocado filling is a little bit different that the classic deviled egg filling because the mayonnaise is replaced with mashed avocado. All the regular filling ingredients are there with a little bit of fresh lime juice for extra kick.
The combination of egg yolk and avocado will make a very dull green, so additional green food colouring is needed to make it vibrant green in colour.
To make the avocado filling, mash half of a ripe avocado in a small bowl until smooth. Use a hand held mixer if necessary. Then, mix a dash of salt, 1 teaspoon mustard powder, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, and 1 teaspoon lime juice into the avocado.
Add three cooked egg yolks to the avocado mixture and mash together until the mixture is smooth. Stir in green food colouring (gel or powder) a little at a time and mix until the mixture reaches desired green colour. Immediately place mixture in a piping bag.
How to Make Multicoloured Classic Deviled Egg Filling
Crack and peel the remaining hard boiled eggs. Slice the eggs in half lengthwise (Mask eggs, Mummy eggs, Spider eggs) or crosswise (Jack ‘o’ lantern eggs). Place the yolks in a medium bowl.
Next, mash the egg yolks with mayonnaise, vinegar (optional), 2 teaspoons mustard powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper to taste. Add more mayonnaise as needed. The filling should be smooth, firm (but not dry) and not too wet so as to hold its shape when piped. Use a hand held mixer if necessary.
Remove half of the filling and place it in a small bowl. Add yellow gel or powdered food colouring and mix until the filling reaches your desired shade of yellow. Immediately place half of the mixture in a piping bag.
Next, add red gel or powdered food colouring to the remaining egg yolk mixture. Stir and add until the mixture reaches desired red colour. Immediately place half of the mixture in a piping bag.
Lastly, to make the orange yolk filling, combine the yellow yolk mixture with red yolk mixture and immediately place in a piping bag.
Assembling Halloween Deviled Eggs
The following variations are only guidelines, feel free to create your own spooky Halloween deviled egg characters. Note that there will be extra sliced egg halves, red pepper, cheese, sliced black olives, and filling of various colours.
If you are making this exact list, I recommend you make them in this order as the Devil and Jack ‘o’ lantern eggs will dry out quicker due to larger surface area exposure to air. For this reason it is best to finish this eggs just prior to serving.
Prepare the piping bags by snipping off the last inch and pushing the filling down to the opening. Twist the large end of the bag just behind the filling. No fancy piping tips are required.
- Mask Eggs – Fill three vertically sliced cooked egg whites with red yolk filling and immediately place cheese masks on top.
- Mummy Eggs – Fill three vertically sliced egg halves with yellow yolk filling and decorate with red pepper triangle eyes and hickory sticks (or pretzel sticks).
- Creepy Bloodshot Eye Eggs – fill three red dyed egg halves with green avocado filling and decorate with sliced olive iris filled with red pepper pupil and black olive lashes.
- Spider Eggs – fill three red dyed (or plain) egg halves halves with green avocado filling and decorate with black olive bodies and legs.
- Devil Deviled Eggs – Fill three horizontally (or vertically) sliced egg halves with yellow yolk filling and decorate with black olive beard and red pepper tails and horns.
- Jack ‘o’ lantern Eggs – Fill three horizontally (or vertically) sliced egg halves with orange yolk filling. Decorate with chive stems, black olive triangle eyes and mouth.
Make Ahead and Storage Instructions
Once assembled, these Halloween Deviled Eggs do not keep for very long. The yolk mixture will begin to dry out after an hour or two of exposure to air. For this reason, it is best to have the yolk filling in piping bags and all the decorative pieces ready ahead of time.
Pipe the egg yolk mixture into the egg halves and decorate just before serving. Or, as a fun party activity, ask your guests to use the decorations to make their own characters!
Do not keep these appetizers out longer than two hours and discard any leftovers when the party is over.
