Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an easier baked appetizer than these Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls. Technically, all the ingredients are listed in the name. Brown up some ground sausage meat, add cream cheese (and cheddar cheese) and roll that rich n tasty filling up in store bought Crescent Roll dough. It really can’t get any simpler.

Best of all, these little rolls are a crowd pleaser! Set a platter down on the table, add your favourite dipping sauce and watch them disappear. No one can resist the creamy sausage filling and all that cheese in tender golden baked pastry.

Speaking of cheese, why not pair them with these Bacon and Cheese Phyllo Cups for a more rounded appetizer platter?

Ingredients for Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls

The beauty of this recipe is in the ingredients. They are easy to find at any grocery store and don’t require a lot of prep time.

  • Ground Sausage Meat
  • Crescent Roll dough
  • Cream Cheese
  • Cheddar Cheese

Using canned Crescent Rolls for this appetizer recipe means no fussing with dough or long proofing times. Each can makes 8 large rolls or for this recipe, 16 smaller rolls. You just unroll the dough, cut the rolls into smaller triangles, roll, and bake.

This is a recipe that you can substitute low fat cream cheese for the full fat variety if you really want to. I do not but you do you.

Don’t sweat the cheddar cheese. It is the most common cheese in the world but if you want to mix it up a bit, you can use what you have. I suggest Swiss, Havarti, Colby, or Gouda Cheese as they have a texture and moisture level similar to cheddar.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find loose ground sausage meat. If this is the case, just buy fresh sausages and take the meat out of the casing. Or, make your own sausage meat using my English style Pork Sausage Patties recipe and omit the part that says to form the meat into patties.

What Kind of Sausage Meat Should I Use?

Since there is no one style of sausage meat needed for this recipe, the flavouring is up to you. Can you handle the heat? Use ground spicy Italian sausage meat or spicy fresh chorizo in the filling.

If you prefer food on the milder side, use mild Italian, Jimmy Dean, or German bratwurst sausage filling. Do you love English style sausages? Use the same filling to create a creamy cheesy version of a classic sausage roll.

Finally, feel free to use sausage meat made from other proteins such as chicken, turkey, or beef.

If you do change the sausage, you may also have to change the cheese to match its flavour.

Crescent Roll Variations

As previously mentioned, changing up the style of sausage is a great way to change this crescent roll recipe. Here are some flavour combinations you can try:

Italian Cream Cheese Sausage Crescent Rolls – Use hot or mild Italian sausage meat, and shredded provolone or taleggio cheese. Add finely diced roasted red pepper, chopped fresh basil, or chopped artichokes. Dip into marinara.

German Style Rolls – Use fresh bratwurst sausage meat and Swiss cheese. Mix sauerkraut into the filling. Dip into hot mustard.

Spanish or Mexican Style – Use Spanish or Mexican fresh chorizo sausage meat and add finely diced roasted red pepper, finely diced onion, cilantro (Mexican version) and Manchego or Queso Oaxaca cheese. Dip into aioli or guacamole.

Breakfast Style – Use English style sausage meat or chicken apple sausage, etc. Fry up some bacon and crumble it into the filling, or finely dice some apples. Mix in Gouda cheese and dip into maple syrup.

How to Make Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls

Start by cooking the sausage meat in a frying pan over medium heat. Use a spatula or turner to break it up as the sausage crumbles and cooks. When the sausage meat is fully browned, remove it from heat and add the block of cream cheese into the warm sausage meat. Stir and break it up until it melts completely.

Allow the meat mixture to cool to room temperature, then stir in the grated cheddar cheese. Preheat oven to 375 F and spray a baking sheet with spray or line it with parchment paper.

Next, unroll a can of Crescent Roll dough and carefully separate the rolls. Use a sharp knife to cut the triangles in half lengthwise from the pointy tip to the middle of the opposite end.

Spoon a teaspoon of filling along the wide end of each crescent triangle and roll the dough over the filling and then towards the tip. Place the roll on the prepared baking sheet and repeat rolling up the remaining filling and dough.

Bake the rolls in 375 F oven for 10-12 minutes or until the rolls are golden.

Make Ahead and Storage

These Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls are so quick to make, you really don’t need to make them ahead of time. If you do, follow the entire recipe, then refrigerate or freeze the baked rolls. For best results, reheat the cold rolls at 350 F for five minutes (or from frozen for ten minutes).

Sausage Cream Cheese Crescent Rolls will keep in the fridge for up to five days and up to three months when frozen.
